Dr Julian Happian-Smith

Lecturer in Automotive Design


Dr Julian Happian-Smith is a Lecturer in Automotive Design for the School of Engineering at University of Newcastle.


He has 45 years experience as an automotive engineering, working on the design of racing and road cars as well as motorcucles. He worked for many years on crash testing cars and motorcycles and acts as an expert witness for motorcycle and car accidents (usually the more unusual type of incidents). In addition to this, Julian has also led Formula Student teams for 15 years at various universities and is an External Examiner for Cranfield University Automotive Engineering Masters course.




BTech Hons – Brunel University – 1976 – Project CFRP bicycle frame design

MSc – Cranfield University – 1980 - Design of lightweight aero engine – Student and Reasearcher

Brunel University – PhD – 1989 – Project with DfT on motorcycle crash safety – carried on for further 6 years as Research Fellow

Sunderland University 1994 to 1999 – Programme Leader for Automotive undergrad courses

Newcastle University – 2014 to Present – Automotive Lecturer running Formula Student
