Dr Néstor Balcázar Arciniega

Background

Doctoral degree in Thermal Engineering (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Barcelona-Spain, September 2014), Postdoctoral Researcher at UPC (2014-2016), Torres-Quevedo Postdoctoral Fellow (Termo Fluids S.L., Barcelona-Spain, 2016-2019), Research Associate at  Newcastle University (August 2019-Present). His research focuses on the development of numerical methods for Computational Fluid Dynamics, Heat and Mass Transfer; with specific contributions on the Direct Numerical Simulation of interfacial multiphase flows, gas-liquid phase change, variable surface tension, interfacial heat/mass transfer, reactive bubbly flows, interface capturing methods (level-set, coupled VoF/level-set, and multiple markers level-set), flux-limiters schemes, finite-volume methods, unstructured meshes, adaptive mesh refinement; as well as their practical implementations on HPC platforms (Cpp , MPI).  Currently he works in turbulent reactive flows at Newcastle University.

Research indicators: author/co-author of 15 research papers on international journals (quartile Q1 SCOPUS), 3 book chapters, 19 contributions to international conference proceedings, supervisor/co-supervisor of 4 doctoral theses (all finished up to 2019, 3 international doctorates, 2 industrial doctorates) on computational multiphase flow (Interfacial flows) at UPC. Researcher/co-leader of 2 Tier-0 PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe) supercomputing projects and 12 RES (Spanish Supercomputing Network) projects.

Direct Numerical Simulation of Interfacial Flows:  hydrodynamics, heat and mass transfer in two-phase flows, bubbly flows, reactive multiphase flows, gas-liquid phase change, variable surface tension, thermocapillary.

Numerical methods for Computational Fluid Dynamics, Heat and Mass transfer:  finite-volume methods, unstructured meshes, adaptive mesh refinement, interface capturing based on level-set, coupled Volume-of-Fluid/level-set, multiple marker level-set methods, for interfacial flows.
