Project description

Stabilising bone prostheses and filling cavities use polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) bone cements. This is due to their suitable mechanical properties. They have recently been investigated for the treatment of bone cancer. In this case, investigations have taken place with and without the addition of magnetic glass-ceramic (MGC). Adding MGC to PMMA bone cements allows for the treatment of cancer via magnetic induction hyperthermia.

I have explored the potential adding MGC to commercial dental and orthopaedic PMMA cements for bone cancer treatment. I prepared the MGC by the melt-quenching technique at 1550°C. I mixed it with dental and orthopaedic PMMA cements in amounts up to 40%. I developed a method for producing magnetic PMMA cements (MPCs) with high reproducibility and dimensional accuracy.

I investigated the best MGC ratio in the cement to meet the criteria of ISO 5833:2002 standard. I explored mechanical properties. These included essential properties of cement such as bioactivity and effective heat generation.

I explored whether magnetic PMMA cement is cytotoxic.

Up to 30% MGC addition showed promising results for use in bone cancer treatment via magnetic hyperthermia.
