Geospatial engineering and science spans geography, science, mathematics and ICT. It is the science of earth mapping, at all scales.

Your learning will include both the theory and practical application of surveying, mapping, geospatial data science and geographic information science. This mixture of learning will provide you with a real-world experience.

You'll benefit from a combination of field trips, project work and industry visits. This ensures you graduate with the technical skills required to succeed in your chosen sector.

  • You'll attend a residential field course in the Lake District. You'll map the Borrowdale Valley.
  • In Stage 3, you'll participate in an advanced field course, which draws on your studies in Stages 1 and 2 to introduce you to a real-world problem. This course takes place in the beautiful surroundings of the British countryside.

Work placements

All of our degrees offer a Year in Industry option. Between Stages 2 and 3, you'll spend a year on a paid industrial placement.

World-class Facilities and Living Laboratories

We have a wide range of Geomatics facilities for teaching and research.

We are a key part of the Innovate UK, Satellite Applications Catapult North East Centre of Excellence.

The Urban Observatory is the largest set of publicly-available, real-time urban data in the UK. It is led by staff in the Surveying, Mapping Sciences and GIS group.
