GENIE

Geospatial Engineering Newcastle Industrial Engagement

This event allows our students to engage directly with our industrial partners.

The event runs very much like a trade show, where students can find out more about:

  • Career and placement opportunities and advice
  • Industry trends/emerging areas
  • Latest software/equipment demonstrations
  • Postgraduate study options
  • Professional qualifications and pathways

Together with industry

GENIE attracts representatives of professional bodies, trade groups, and commercial organisations from across Europe. Typically almost 30 companies attend.

Students studying our BSc Surveying and Mapping Science and BSc Geographic Information Science degrees from all years are welcome. The event allows them to see the breadth of professional practice and disciplines that relate to their degrees. It enables them to develop confidence in talking to professionals. It aids the academic and social transitions throughout their studies and beyond. GENIE provides an ongoing learning experience.

Recent exhibitors at GENIE have included: Ordnance Survey; Leica Geosystems; Atkins; Arup; Skanska; Fugro; WYG; Jacobs; Wardell Armstrong; Plowman Craven; Mott McDonald; Malcolm Hughes Land Surveyors; Severn Partnership; Arcadis; Scopus Engineering; Atlantic Geomatics; Ministry of Defence; CBRE Ltd; CICES; Hollis; Tri Tech Surveys; Geomatic Solutions; SCCS Survey; Murphy Surveys and others.

Speaking on the benefits of the event, Engagement with Industry facilitator Abby French explained that, "GENIE provides a unique opportunity for professionals in the sector. Many are Newcastle Alumni. They return to the university, reconnect with staff and support the next generations of students. It’s a tremendous opportunity for our students to ‘map’ their career options and start building their own networks. We are grateful for the long-standing support of many companies. Several also support us by sitting on our industrial advisory board”
