Byrd's Great Service and the Newcastle Bach Choir

William Byrd's Great Service, probably written in the 1580s, was largely neglected for well over three hundred years until in 1923 the Newcastle Bach Choir pioneered complete performances in Newcastle and London and restored it to its rightful place as a major English choral work.  This lecture explores the relationship between the music and the choir and how these first performances came about.
