Illuminating the Self - Science and art exhibition

Illuminating the Self is a new exhibition by artists Susan Aldworth and Andrew Carnie exploring the cutting edge science and technology involved in the Newcastle University led CANDO project.

Date/Time: 16 January - 29 February

Venue: Vane, Level 1, Commercial Union House, 39 Pilgrim Street, Newcastle upon Tyne

Involving neuroscientists and engineers, the project is attempting to develop a new light based therapy for focal epilepsy.

Aldworth and Carnie investigate the human perspective of living with epilepsy and the potential impact of technological interventions within the brain. The exhibition, which also includes work at Newcastle University's Hatton Gallery, showcases a range of techniques from traditional printmaking to large scale video and sculptural installations.

It is an artistic response to the CANDO (Controlling Abnormal Network Dynamics using Optogenetics) project. They are building a cutting edge, clinical, gene therapy enhanced, bioelectronics implant to prevent seizures in those with focal epilepsy.

Entry to the gallery is free, Wednesday to Saturday, 12pm – 5pm.
