Chasing the Story: Storytelling in TV, Film, Radio and for Stage

with Mat Chaplin and Michael Chaplin

The workshop will focus on developing stories across various media (TV and film, radio and theatre). Mat and Michael will deliver a presentation, and in the afternoon facilitate discussion and development of your story ideas – bring one along!

Mat Chaplin is a producer and story producer for television. After spending almost 10 years as a script editor and development producer at Tiger Aspect Productions, he became a producer with credits including Blood and Oil, Beaver Falls, Silent Witness and A Touch of Cloth. Most recently, he produced the Sky Atlantic drama Fortitude.

Michael Chaplin is a writer for television, radio and the theatre and has written many series, serials and single films for television and single plays for Radio 4. He has also had a long association with Newcastle’s Live Theatre. Since returning to live in his native Newcastle, he has written various factual books about the North East, including the acclaimed Tyne View. Michael is a Visiting Professor at the School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics at Newcastle University.


Creative Saturdays are one-day creative writing workshops led by celebrated authors and supported by writers from NCLA. Workshops are held in the Percy Building, Newcastle University, from 10am to 4pm. Please bring your own lunch; tea and coffee will be provided. The course fee is £40 per workshop.
