PIPS Project Opportunity - Bionow Database & Directory

3 month placement from January 2018

Bionow is the membership organisation for life science businesses in the North of England (see www.bionow.co.uk).  Bionow currently has over 280 subscribing company members across the UK (see http://www.bionow.co.uk/membership/memberdirectory.aspx?l=all ) with a network linking to over 500 life science businesses in the Norther sector and a further 500 businesses in the specialised supply chain.

Our membership base includes start-ups and early stage firms as well as established growth-oriented companies. Bionow's membership offering focuses on the specific needs of firms at their different stages of development, including dedicated business support programmes, shared procurement schemes with significant cost savings, exclusive insurance benefits, recruitment and training services, R&D funding support, specialist local and national events and access to a vibrant network.

Project Outline

To update the Bionow company database and support the production of the published Bionow Directory in Q118 and its searchable online version which maps over 1000 businesses across the North of England.  This will involve reviewing existing extensive information and using desk research to refine and update.  In addition, to widen the existing and already comprehensive Bionow knowledge base to include the exciting emerging industrial field of e-health as an additional subsector. In the course of this work to capture new key contacts within Bionow’s network of companies to enable future business development.

Bionow is regularly approached by large businesses and Universities hoping to partner with smaller (SME) businesses. Smaller businesses are also generally interested in partnering with large companies and institutions. This project will build upon the extensive categorisation of the company database carried out in 2015 to enable Bionow to proactively identify and link relevant companies to each other, to Universities and to other institutions. The ultimate output from this project will be an improved service offering within the Bionow portfolio (see www.bionow.co.uk).  There will also be opportunities to use the database for real life queries e.g. to support foreign investment opportunities and commercial partner searching.

The project will be managed by the Executive Director for Business Development and the role will involve close liaison with all members of the Bionow team.  There will be opportunities to participate in Events and associated activities at locations across the Northwest.
