Careers Guidance

Whether you have a specific career goal in mind or you are wondering what next steps to take the University provides a range of support for you.

The University Careers Service has dedicated careers advisers for postgraduate research students. You are welcome to drop into the Careers Service in the King's Gate Building where you can see an advisor at any time. You can call into the Careers Service, Level 1, King’s Gate and speak to an adviser for 1-2-1 feedback on applications and career guidance. Careers consultants are available for short initial enquiries, Monday to Friday, 11-4.30pm, no appointment required.

The Careers service run sessions as part of the Research Student Development Programme, inlcuding an advice session on Getting 'That' PostDoc for those who are keen to stay in academic research.

The Careers Service offer a number of helpful resources including Exploring Options to help you decide what career will work out best for you, this includes information on scientific research, healthcare and science jobs outside of the laboratory external resources you might find useful when searching for jobs include vacancies online, Nature Jobs, and Prospects

There is also support for you when you are applying for jobs such as advice on writing CVs and covering letters and there is a list of coming events like careers fairs, workshops and employer visits. To stay up to date with what is on offer and what other researchers are doing there is the Researchers' Blog.

Remember the ePortfolio system is a great way to keep an up to date record of your achievements and your development, this will really help when it comes to applying for jobs.
