About the Great North Children's Hospital

entrance to great North Children's HospitalThe Great North Children’s Hospital, opened November 2010, brings together most Children Services within the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust onto one site and provides modern, state-of-the-art facilities within an environment designed to meet the needs of ill children and young people.

It is one of the largest Children’s Hospitals in England outside London and, as a regional hub for paediatrics in the North East, the new children's hospital offers a unique infrastructure for clinical and translational research for children and young people in our region.

Alongside the clinical services, Newcastle University hosts a vibrant academic programme of Paediatrics and Child Health, which was originally founded by Professor Sir James Spence in 1942 and was the first academic department of Child Health in England.

Within the Great North Children’s Hospital the Great North Children’s Hospital Research Unit (GNCH-RU) has recently been established to provide a focus for clinical research, and an infrastructure to support NIHR portfolio adopted studies including commercial paediatric clinical trials. The new GNCH-RU works in partnership with the research teams and departments in the Trust and is linked to and funded through the local Comprehensive Research Network (CLRN), the Medicines for Children Network (MCRN) and other topical research networks (eg the National Cancer Research Network (NCRN)).

Paediatrics is a key strand of the clinical academic training pathway within Newcastle Biomedicine and we run a successful academic training programme in partnership between Newcastle University, the Northern Deanery and the Great North Children’s Hospital.

Research is integral part of our daily clinical practice at the Great North Children's Hospital and essential to improve treatment outcomes for our patients.
