Post-Doctoral Fellowships

Post-Doctoral Fellowships

We invite expressions of interest for applications for ongoing post-doctoral fellowship schemes including those funded by international funding bodies.

Sociology at Newcastle University is recognised for internationally excellent research through the Policy, Ethics and Life Sciences (PEALS) research centre and across its research clusters:

  • Power, Inequalities and Citizenship
  • Identities, Embodiments and Selves
  • Imagining Pasts and Futures

We have a vibrant research environment with regular research group meetings, an annual seminar series which supports fruitful discussion of ideas at all stages of development, and high levels of research income from ‘blue chip’ funders such as the:

  • UK research councils
  • European Union
  • Wellcome Trust

We are keen to build on our existing strengths by attracting early career scholars with outstanding potential to work with us on research projects that will make an original and significant contribution to the study of sociology. As such, we invite expressions of interest for applications for ongoing schemes including fellowships funded by non-UK funding bodies. These include:

We welcome applications from postdoctoral fellows wishing to visit Newcastle University as part of their research programme.

We also welcome enquiries and applications for other postdoctoral funding schemes.

Applications for Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships 2019 Call

Call for expressions of interest

In January 2019, Leverhulme Trust will re-open the scheme for applications to the Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships.  This scheme offers 50% match-funding for salary costs of three-year academic research position for an early career researcher to undertake a significant piece of publishable work.  This opportunity aims to provide career development for those who are at a relatively early stage of their academic careers, but who have a proven record of research.  Approximately 100 fellowships will be available but further details will be confirmed by the funder in January 2019, including the funder deadline date.

The Leverhulme Early Career Researcher call is strongly competitive, and as a result there is a quota and selection process. In School of Geography, Poltitics and Sociology, we normally have more potential applicants than quota spaces, therefore in order to ensure that applicants are fairly assessed and ranked by the School in advance of the Faculty selection, there will be an internal School selection process, where working drafts of applications (2 page proposal plus 2 page CV) are reviewed and candidates selected. The timescale will be:

  • Thursday 13th December 2018.  Closing date for draft applications for review by School
  • Monday 1st January 2018 (TBC)  Scheme Opens
  • Thursday 10th January 2018  GPS selection committee
  • Friday 25th January 2018   Schools notify HaSS Faculty of applications (Applications to be on official Leverhulme forms)
  • Friday 15th February   Grants and Contracts submission deadline.
  • Friday 1st March (TBC)   Leverhulme submission deadline.

Please send expressions of interest and draft applications (2 page proposal plus 2 page CV) to Heatherh McGrath, School Research Administrator ( and Robert Hollands, School Research Director ( by 5pm, Thursday 13th December, for collation and review in advance of the selection panel.
