Benjamin Faude's research focuses on global governance institutions, regional institutions (such as the EU), and international courts and tribunals.
Most of his academic work is inspired by the observation that all contemporary global policy challenges, such as global health, environmental sustainability, financial stability, and the protection of human rights are governed by sets of global governance institutions which find their particular competences overlapping under no coordination from an overarching authority.
The key question that motivates Faude's work is: to what extent is effective and legitimate global governance possible in such an environment? In order to provide persuasive and meaningful answers, Faude analyzes how institutional complexity affects contemporary global governance and, within this context, the normative qualities of global governance institutions.
Theoretically, Faude's research draws on and contributes to rational, historical, and sociological institutionalism. Methodologically, he is committed to multi-method research combining qualitative, quantitative, and formal methods.
Faude's research has been published in leading international journals, such as International Studies Quarterly, The Review of International Organizations, International Theory, Global Policy, Global Environmental Politics, Global Constitutionalism, and Global Governance.
He is a member of the Global Policy North Network which is a consortium of scholars from various disciplines and universities, working on a range of global governance and global policy issues.
Benjamin Faude has talked about the work on "Low-Cost Institutions" (LCIs) and "Hybrid Institutional Complexes" (HICs) he has done together with Kenneth W. Abbott (Arizona State University) on The Know Show Podcast.
Before joining Newcastle, Faude has taught at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), Free University of Berlin, the University of Bamberg, and Charles University in Prague.
He has received the LSE's 2020-2021 Excellence in Education Award for outstanding teaching contribution and educational leadership.
