Identities, Culture & Heritage

Identities, Culture and Heritage

About

This theme considers concepts and issues surrounding notions of identity, culture, and heritage.

This theme understands these categories as: socially constructed, ever changing processual entities that are subject to broader social, cultural, political and economic forces; and spatially mobile leaky, messy and excessive.

We maintain a rich interest in the identities, cultures and heritage, of countries and continents in the global north and the global south and a range of agents, including government actors, growth coalitions, the local entrepreneurial state, urban elites, NGOS, local activists, conservationists, conservation practitioners, town planners, informal housing networks and co-operatives, urban designers and architects.

We are concerned with a range of empirical issues including:

  • urban responses to environmental issues
  • historical imaginaries
  • collective memory, and nostalgia
  • cultures of heritage
  • heritage management
  • urban and architectural conservation
  • town planning and landscape-based conservation and self-made, informal settlements
  • informal economies and home based enterprises

The theme leader is Andrew Law.
