Classics and ancient history at Newcastle University has a long and distinguished reputation. We've been teaching Latin and Greek here since 1874, and ancient history and classical archaeology since 1910 and 1931 respectively.
Our staff include scholars of outstanding international reputation. Our research covers all major aspects of the study of the ancient world.
We offer a number of single and joint honours undergraduate programmes, and provide linguistic training in the classical languages at all levels. Classics at Newcastle has recently been singled out for its innovative approach to language teaching and for its close connection between teaching and research.
At postgraduate level, we offer both taught MA programmes and MLitt, MPhil and PhD research degrees. Our postgraduate programmes are closely linked to our staff 's distinctive research interests.
Our research was rated very highly in the Research Excellent Framework 2014. Our scores earned us 12th place in the national ranking, reflecting our internationally excellent research. More than 30% of our publications were indicated as research that is world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour.
