School of History, Classics and Archaeology

Our research into performance is characterised by a focus on ancient rhetoric, drama and music.

This work naturally extends to the reception of ancient literature in medieval and modern times, and to modern re-enactment of ancient drama. We undertake innovative work on:

  • the sound of ancient musical instruments
  • performances in now-lost spaces
  • the consumption of music culture in modern Europe
  • the insights that study of performance provides for social history
