ECN - Hadrian's Wall CF

ECN - Hadrian's Wall CF

Hadrian's Wall is of obvious importance to anyone with an interest in any or all of Classics, Archaeology and History.  We shall be visiting:

  1. Chesters fort, with its idyllic riverside location, well-preserved bath-house and quirky 19th-century museum (complete with Roman Scottie dog!!)
  2. The remains of one of the two surviving Roman bridges designed to carry the Wall over water

COME EQUIPPED with stout footwear (ground may be muddy and much of the walking is across rough grass) and a windproof coat - even if the sun is shining!

Schedule (weather permitting!)

  • Arrive at Newcastle Eldon Square Bus Station by 9:55am at the latest.
  • Catch X85 bus to Hexham at 10:00am (arr. 10:41am).
  • Quick look at Hexham, before catching 680 bus to Chollerford at 11:25am.
  • Short walk to Chesters fort, arriving c. 12pm noon.  Explore fort, bathhouse and museum; lunch in café (or bring sandwiches!).
  • Leave fort c. 3pm; walk back to Chollerford then along other side of river to explore the bridge remains.  Return to village for refreshments before catching bus at 5:05pm back to Hexham, then 5:55pm bus from there to Newcastle, arriving 6:37pm.

(You can if need be leave earlier, catching 2:45pm bus from Chollerford and getting back to Newcastle 4:21pm.)

Entry to the two Roman sites will be free.  You pay for your own ticket by public transport: the best bet is a NE day Explorer ticket costing £10.90. Otherwise: Money for refreshments/lunch if you're planning to buy these.

You can just turn up on the day, but if you are definitely planning to come it is useful to have some idea of this in advance - especially if you would be travelling under your own steam (in that case please let me know a contact number).

Interested? Email Dr Susanna Phillippo for more details. Friends from outside the School are also welcome!

Due to forecast high winds, tomorrow's Exploring Classical Northumberland trip to Chesters Fort has been rescheduled to Sun 27th Feb. Tomorrow's trip will still visit Hexham. Please email for queries and details.
