Inspirational Women of North-East England: Past, Present, Future

The logo for the Inspirational Women of the North East exhibition.

Inspirational Women of the North East (IWNE) celebrated women of the past and present for their contributions to the region.

Through stunning art and photography produced by Newcastle University students and submitted by members of the local community (people’s nominations via social media and the local press), the intention was to combat the invisibility of women's work in the present and bring recognition to those of the past.

In so doing, we hoped to make a change for the future.

The exhibition, which launched at the Hatton Gallery in November 2013, included women from a wide range of backgrounds including:

and many more. In addition to these subjects, the exhibition celebrated those involved in its creation, whether it be art work, organisation or promotion.

Co-sponsors included the Vice Chancellor’s Fund, Catherine Cookson Foundation and the Newcastle Institute for Social Renewal.

The IWNE project incorporated an art exhibition and range of associated projects, including iWalks, iTalks, iDebates, podcasts and music.
