Staff Profile

Dr Matthew Prevett

Faith and Spirituality Support Coordinator / Visiting Fellow (School of History, Classics and Archaeology)

Background

I coordinate the Chaplaincy Service at Newcastle University, working with our team of chaplains and student faith societies to provide support and encouragement for students and staff of all faiths and none.

I'm a minister in the United Reformed Church (URC) and have served churches in the North East of England including Whitley Bay, Newcastle, and Teesside. I am a Trustee for the Newcastle City Centre Chaplaincy, an ecumenical initiative based at St Andrew's Church, Newgate Street. I am involved in URC worship matters, including the worship stream of Stepwise (a lay discipleship programme) and the URC Music Network.

I have a music degree from the University of Durham, and have theology degrees from Cambridge (Westminster College & Trinity Hall, BTh) and University of Wales Trinity Saint David (PhD). I have presented on a number of topics, including authority in the Church, aesthetics, gym culture, and Victorian Nonconformity. I have my first monograph (based on my doctoral thesis) due for publication in 2021.

I have interests in the intersection of theology and contemporary culture, especially the world of fitness, music and the arts, and law.

I am passionate about ensuring all aspects of equality, diversity and inclusion are part of the life of the chaplaincy, and would welcome opportunity to speak to anyone who feels excluded because of their faith or spirituality, especially students and staff who identify as LGBT .

I am happy to speak to anyone considering a vocation to Christian ministry, and offer guidance to anyone looking to develop their Christian discipleship through study.
