HEI International Student Conference 2022

17 November 2022

The University of Oslo hosted the HEI International Student Conference between 19-21 October 2022. The conference included five keynote talks, and 18 student presentations with students from Aarhus University, the University of Gothenburg, Newcastle University, University of Stirling, University of Leicester, The Norwegian Institute in Rome, and the University of Oslo, as well as a poster session with nine shorter presentations. The presentations were varied, covering topics from the Mesolithic era to the future, looting to restitution, small objects to large landscapes, decaying heritage to new interpretations.

Three students from Newcastle University were invited to present their ongoing PhD work. Muhammed Topdaş, who also helped organize the conference on behalf of Newcastle University, discussed a small section of his PhD research pertaining to decolonisation in Scandinavian museums, including his reliminary thoughts and findings from the National Museum of Denmark. Samantha Vaughn presented her research on the Museum of Communism, Prague. In particular, she spoke about its construction of a narrative of victimization and the museum's utilization of silence. And representing Newcastle University with this keynote talk, Derrick Mwebaza presented his bioengineering project that advances a traditional construction technique. He examined how African earth-built accommodation heritage can be modernised and used to provide 'green' environments.

The variety of presentations allowed a mixture of perspectives to be brought to bear on the concept of heritage. It is our hope that this will help to create nourishing collaborations. In addition to the presentations, the activities organised during the conference also strengthened the relationship between the participants, such as dinners together and guided tours of Oslo's Museum of Cultural History.
