Our staff also provide a unique combination of methods, fieldwork and language training. 

Language learning

We provide high quality training in the languages of the Iberian-American regions.

In funded PhD programmes, additional time is allocated to learning these languages. For example, the ESRC North East Doctoral Training Centre Iberian and Latin American Studies pathway. This is part of fieldwork preparation. 

Learning environment

The student learning environment is continuously renewed by frequent visiting fellows and speakers from Latin America and the Caribbean.

We run regular seminar series and workshops.

Our staff and postgraduates play an important part in the annual ESRC advanced training module.

These formal spaces are complemented by informal meetings. Postgraduates and staff can share research ideas, writing and findings as they emerge.
