Overview

Sensors is one of our 10 main research themes. Find out about what we do, and which members of staff are involved.

Synthetic biology has the potential to have a significant impact in the development of new sensors.

This is especially the case for custom-designed molecular recognition reagents.

And, for biological sensors for diagnostics and monitoring based on engineered organisms.

We are able to engineer and fine-tune bacterial sensing systems. We can then couple these systems to micro-device technologies. These can provide quantifiable outputs in real time.

This ability will lead to the development of sensors which can be applied in a variety of areas. These areas include:

  • medical diagnostics and epidemiology
  • environmental monitoring
  • process control
  • agriculture
