History of the University

Newcastle University was officially founded in 1963 through an Act of Parliament but it is in fact a much older institution. It can trace its origins back to 1834 to a School of Medicine and Surgery and also to the Armstrong College, which was founded in the city in 1871 for the teaching of the physical sciences. More detail on this can be found on our History of the University page.
