Alzheimer's Disease

Non-invasive imaging methods such as PET are likely to be increasingly important in evaluating potential treatments for Alzheimer's disease.

Several approaches have been reported:
  • Carbon-11 labelled markers of beta-amyloid plaques (eg Pittsburgh compound B 11C-PiB)
  • Fluorine-18 tracers for β-amyloid, eg florbetapir (18F-AV-45), flutemetamol (18F-GE067), florbetaben (18F-BAY94-9172), and 18F-FDDNP
  • Markers of altered metabolism, especially 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)
  • Measurement of cerebral blood flow with 15O-labelled water
