Background

As Core Physicist at the Newcastle Magnetic Resonance Centre, I work internal and external collaborators to develop diverse range of MR imaging methodology with strong emphasis on clinical applications. Please see research and publication tabs for additional details

Research


Brain Imaging

  • Development of multi-parametric protocols for clinical research including function MRI, structural DTI and ASL (perfusion) imaging

  • Development of techniques non-invasive measurement of inhibitory (GABA) and excitatory (Glutamate) neuro-trasmitters, including computational modelling (actor-critic). 

  • Application: Parkinson Disorders, Dementia, Tinnitus, Understanding audio-visual interaction and pain,Traumatic Brain injury, Cognitive decline in auto-immune disorders e.g.  AIDS, PBC

Cardiac MRI

  • Development and optimisation of the full spectrum of the cardiac imaging methodologies include cine imaging, cardiac tagging, 4D flow imaging and Cardiac MR spectroscopy. Clinical application include

  • Healthy ageing and hypertension, Crypotgenic Stroke, Diabetes, Clinical trials (Thyrami and Bezafibrate)

Renal/Leg MRI

  • Development of multi-parametric protocol to renal function assessment including tracer kinetics (DCE) and T1 estimation fibrosis. Application in chronic kidney disease, part of the cost action on renal MRI and UK renal imaging network 

  • Development of pCASL based leg perfusion measurement

Multi Nuclear Spectroscopy

  • P31 spectroscopy for leg exercise and pH estimation in clinical trials e.g. RITPBC, Bezafibrate,

Advanced image reconstruction

Recent work includes novel development nonlinear reconstruction techniques in-order speed up acquisition and investigates motion compensation. Including working with open source platforms  Gadgetron, employing deep neural networks (generative adversarial networks, tensorflow)

Technical support for

  • Two Achieve 3 Tesla scanners, include pulse sequence programming

  • Image Analysis
