Staff Profile

Dr Xiao Wang

Senior Lecturer

  • MBBS (1st Hons)
  • MS.C & Mphil in Immunology & Microbiology
  • PhD in Transplantation Immunology

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Principle Investigator in the Transplantation and Regenerative Medicine group
  • MRes Programme lead and Module lead (Transplantation Sciences)

Research interests: The therapeutic potential of human mesenchymal stem/stromal cells, regulatory T cells, and their secretomes, in immune modulation and regenerative medicine.

Current research projects:

  • Mesenchymal stromal cell-derived extracellular vesicles (MSC-EVs) in OA joint tissue repair/regeneration
  • Mesenchymal stromal cell-derived extracellular vesicles (MSC-EVs) in DC modulation
  • Regulatory T cells and Treg-EVs in DC and T cell modulation in the context of graft-versus-host disease
  • Biomarker potential of extracellular vesicles isolated from body fluids

My research focus is to develop, evaluate, and improve innovative therapeutic strategies using adult stem cells and immunomodulatory cells, including haematopoietic stem cell therapy for haematological and immunological disorders, regulatory T cell therapy for transplant complications, and mesenchymal stem cell therapy for immune regulation and regenerative medicine, with an increasing focus on cellular secretome particularly extracellular vesicles.

 Recent research activities:

  •  The role of mesenchymal stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles in immune modulation

  •  The therapeutic potential of using MSC-derived extracellular vesicles in bone and cartilage repair

  •  The effect of mesenchymal stem cell conditioned media on cutaneous wound healing

  •  Human Treg-derived extracellular vesicles and their role in immune modulation

  •  Human Treg mediated transcriptional and functional modulation of dendritic cells

  •  Modulation of graft-versus-host reaction by human Treg using an in vitro human GvHD skin explant model
