Nutrition, Exercise and Metabolism

Overview

This theme unites both basic and clinical scientists across a breadth of translational research areas. These include nutrition, exercise, metabolism, hepatology and fibrosis.

We have a goal to discern

  • genetic/epigenetic
  • molecular
  • cellular

mechanisms driving metabolic diseases and organ fibrosis

Metabolic disorders/dysfunction or persistent tissue injury and inflammation that drive fibrosis can affect many organs. These include the heart, pancreas, muscle, liver, lung, kidney, knee and skin.

Lifestyle factors such as physical activity and diet can also affect these diseases.

Through our research, we aim to advance our understanding of progression of these diseases.

This enables us to develop new therapeutic strategies for treatment of metabolic and fibrotic diseases. It also helps us improve patient wellbeing and and their ability to live healthier lives.

Research interest

Research in this theme focuses on:

  • understanding fundamental processes of metabolism, tissue injury, inflammation, fibrosis and tissue regeneration
  • clinical phenotyping and interrogation of patient disease samples to:
    • aid biomarker discovery
    • develop non-invasive imaging approaches
    • identify new targets for therapy
  • understanding how nutrition and exercise can modulate disease and lead to healthy ageing

Research groups/centres within the theme include:

Our researchers look at the factors that drive fibrosis, which is the scarring of various organs.
