Research Excellence Framework (REF)

Research Excellence Framework

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 assessed the quality of research in the UK’s higher education institutions.

The REF was first carried out in 2014, replacing the previous Research Assessment Exercise.

The review was undertaken by the four UK higher education funding bodies:

The review is assessed on three main criteria:

  • quality of research outputs
  • impact of research (beyond the University)
  • vitality of the research environment

Our Institute submitted to Unit of Assessment (UoA) 1 and the results are now published.

In previous analysis, the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008 produced the following results for Newcastle University.
