Patient and public involvement

Patient and public involvement and engagement

Our staff have expertise and experience in engaging with patients and carers, community groups, and medical professionals, and are active in

  • Involvement – in project development, data collection, and analysis
  • Participation – as subjects in research
  • Engagement – in disseminating research and generating research questions

Involvement and participation

Our staff form an integral part of Voice, an involvement forum established at Newcastle University, and we provide input to the Research Design Service North East consumer panel

IHS’s interest extends into research on patient and public involvement, and on evaluation of projects, for instance in our Health & Social Care theme.

We also provide advice, support, and training to the Faculty of Medical Sciences and Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals, and include training on public & patient involvement in our MSc programmes on public health, health services research, and global public health.

In 2018 IHS hosts two major events on public and patient involvement:

•    PPI consultation workshop in November for public and community
•    International Perspectives on Evaluation of PPI in Research

IHS works closely with communities as well to share its expertise, explore issues that are important to society, and to support civic and community groups to participate in policy.

Below is a small selection of our research projects and activities in which, in one way or another, we are involved with communuities and patients, civil society groups, medical and healthcare professionals, and policy makers in local, national, and global contexts.
