The Institute of Health & Society provides a superb environment for study. Some of the UK’s leading researchers in ageing and the lifecourse, public health, health inequalities, health systems, and health improvement and behaviour change are joined by experts in applied health and data sciences. The Institute is an anchor for health studies and for health improvement in Newcastle and the North East, with extensive research with doctors and health professionals, and patients, carers, and the public.

The Institute is also active in global health research, with collaborators and activities in all continents. Projects include ageing and dementia in India and Malaysia, neurological conditions in East Africa, alcohol and substance misuse in Latin America, access to medicines and rational medicines use in India, Uganda, and Brazil, and mhealth initiatives across Africa.

The deep local engagement has built the skills and insights we need for global work, which in turn brings perspective to local issues.

Our students are taught by our leading staff, and will learn about the latest developments in their subject areas, and they can contribute to active research projects. Students come from the North East, the UK, and many countries around the world, with backgrounds in subjects from medicine and the health professions to biosciences, politics, and geography.
