Children and families

Overview

Prof Judith Rankin (primary lead)
Prof Simon Forrest
Dr Ruth McGovern
Dr Lindsay Pennington

Health and wellbeing are strongly influenced by what happens to people early on in their lives. Our families and our caring and social networks and the communities in which we live shape aspects of our health from before we are born, through conception, pregnancy, infancy, childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood.

Within IHS we bring together a wide range of disciplinary and professional perspectives and methodologies to advance knowledge and understanding that positively influence children’s and families’ lives to achieve better outcomes. We undertake qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research, and our expertise ranges from population health, epidemiology, health psychology, speech and language, sociology and social sciences, and history, to biomedical specialities such as neurodisability.

We engage with colleagues from across the University as well as from public and professional bodies.
