A Study of Donor Ex-vivo Lung Perfusion in UK Lung Transplantation (DEVELOP-UK)

The DEVELOP-UK study is designed to assess the clinical effectiveness and cost effectiveness of ex-vivo lung perfusion (EVLP), a technology allowing objective assessment and reconditioning of unusable donor lungs, in increasing UK lung transplantation activity. We do not know what patients think about EVLP and research related to people’s experiences of receiving donor organs is also limited, therefore this study will refer to the broader sociological literature pertaining to people’s experiences of health, illness and health care to inform data collection and analysis.

The aim of this embedded 24 month qualitative study is to identify, describe and understand patients’ pre and postoperative perceptions of EVLP, and to explore how these are mediated by individual, social, physical and clinical factors.
