Neurobiology of brain systems for communication

Our group is unravelling evolutionary relationships in brain function. We are guided by the idea that information on how the human brain has changed during its evolutionary history is indispensable for advancing treatments for cognitive and communication disorders.

This includes addressing forms of aphasia, agnosia and language disorders. Our research uses advanced imaging and neurophysiological methods to study perceptual awareness and cognitive brain function, with an emphasis on communication: verbal or multisensory.

In collaboration with the Centre for Research in Linguistic and Language Sciences (CRiLLS) we have formed the Brain and Language Group. The group includes neuroscientists, evolutionary biologists, linguistic and developmental language scientists, speech and language therapists, and research clinicians interested in speech and language-related disorders and postgraduate students and research staff that have an interest in the brain basis for speech and language. Our aim is to foster cross-disciplinary interactions in order to produce novel research approaches to this topic.
