Connecting with RDP

Access to the GNOME desktop is available via a standard remote desktop ("RDP") client. The RDP service is available from on-campus IP addresses, to use the RDP service from off-campus you should connect via the remote desktop gateway service.

Connecting with Windows Remote Desktop client

Open the "Remote Desktop Connection" program.

In the "General" tab enter the name of the Unix server (eg, "aidan.ncl.ac.uk") but leave "Username" blank.

In the "Display" tab adjust the display size and colour depth as required. On low-speed connections you may have a better desktop experience with a lower colour depth.

Connecting with RDP client

Click "Connect", you will be presented with the Unix desktop login screen, enter your campus login account details and click "OK".

Connecting with RDP client

After a moment you will be connected and see the GNOME desktop.

Connecting from off-campus using RDP gateway

The Remote Desktop Gateway service can be used to access the GNOME RDP desktop from off-campus.  The gateway service requires registration, please see the service page for more information.

Once you have registered for the gateway service, configure the remote desktop client as above and go to the "Advanced" tab and click "Settings" in the "Connect from anywhere" section.

Connecting with RDP client

Check "Use these RD Gateway server settings" and in the "Server name" field enter "tsgateway.ncl.ac.uk". Uncheck the option that says "Use my RD Gateway credentials for the remote computer".

Now when you connect you will first need to authenticate with the gateway server and then you will be connected to the Unix desktop login screen.
