Funding to Study Law
Newcastle Law School has a range of scholarship opportunities that can support your studies. We provide these via funds from corporate partners and alumni.
Ward Hadaway sponsor two scholarships on the LLB programme within the Law School.
Each scholarship award will involve the payment of £1,000 at the beginning of Stage 2 by Ward Hadaway. It also entitles two weeks' work experience with Ward Hadaway paid at £100 per week.
This award focuses on:
- academic high performers
- those looking at North East law career after graduation
Ward Hadaway is in the selection process. The Law School must agree the final decision.
We consider LLB students and those taking part in European Legal Studies.
Womble Bond Dickinson (WBD) traditionally fund up to one scholarships of £500. This goes to a student on the LLB programme within the Law School.
Womble Bond Dickinson LLP have also offered work-based learning opportunities. These have been for students in receipt of the scholarship in the past.
The scholarships go to highest-achieving students who come through PARTNERS supported entry.
Sweeney Miller Law will offer the opportunity of a scholarship in collaboration with Newcastle University.
The award focuses on the highest performers in:
- Land Law
- Contract Law
- Equity
The application process takes place after students have received their second-year exam results.
The successful candidate will receive a £1000 scholarship, along with the opportunity of voluntary work experience (paid at £100 per week) within their Newcastle based office. During this time, the student will have the opportunity to learn about the route to qualification and the opportunities in the legal field that may be available.
We'll make up to 10 awards of £500 at the beginning of semester 2. These grants support you by helping with general living costs and expenses. They are non-repayable. They can go on anything from rent and books to household bills and travel expenses. The 'Achievement through Adversity Grant' is a one-off grant and paid only in the first year of study.
To be eligible for one of these grants students must be:
- a registered Stage 1 student
- able to prove a commitment to the degree programme
The selection panel look at many factors in assessing this criterion, including:
- attendance
- submission of formative coursework
- an academic reference, ideally one provided by a seminar leader
- demonstrable academic potential, as judged by pre-University qualifications
- academic performance during Semester 1 at University
- indicating in a supporting statement how they have overcome, or are overcoming adversity
- outlining how the grant will support their studies
The grants are particularly intended to support widening participation students. We'll also consider those who entered via the PARTNERS route.
We may give preference to those students.
Students are informed of the application process and deadlines annually.
The Undergraduate Law Alumni Scholarships will consist of two awards of £1,500 to students at the beginning of Year 2. Recipients receive the same level of award at the beginning of Stage 3.
Recipients also receive the same level of award if they're doing an intercalating exchange/placement year between Stages 2 and 3.
These are awarded on the basis of:
- academic merit
- recognition of circumstances where a student is overcoming, or has overcome, adversity
Students learn of the application process and deadline at the end of their first year of study. One condition of the awards is recipients should expect to meet with donors at alumni events.
The awards are for international students from outside of the EU. They available to those who enrol on any taught programme at Newcastle.
Each scholarship is for £1,500 per year, payable towards tuition fees. For more information please see our Postgraduate Funding and Finance page.
Mr Benjamin Ile has very generously donated a gift in honour of his mentor, Mr. Lucius Nwosu SAN, to provide a bursary of £500 to a Nigerian student registered with Newcastle Law School, and who is either:
- pursuing the LLM with a clearly expressed interest in environmental law or;
- is a stage 3 UG student who is approved to write either a Dissertation or a Research Topic in environmental law
The bursary will be payable following registration at the start of the 2023/24 academic year and confirmation of the specific work to be undertaken in the area of environmental law.
If there is more than one student eligible for the bursary, the award will be made following consideration of each student’s prior academic achievement and interest/expertise in environmental law as demonstrated on their LLM application or in the case of a stage 3 UG student their previous UG study and dissertation/research project proposal.
Newcastle Law School and the Mediator Academy are pleased to offer 7 scholarships for outstanding applicants who apply to commence the LLM Mediation & International Commercial Dispute Resolution degree programme in September 2023:
- David Richbell Scholarships: £4000 credited to the student to reduce the overall cost of tuition fees
- Newcastle Law School Scholarships: £2000 credited to the student to reduce the overall cost of tuition fees
The scholarship will be payable towards tuition fees.
To be considered for an award applicants must have applied to the LLM Mediation & International Commercial Dispute Resolution degree programme.
Eligible candidates will be assessed according to evidence of:
- academic ability
- evidence of commitment to studies
- quality of application

Bar Access Fund
The Bar Access Fund is generously funded by an alumni of Newcastle Law School. It supports current registered students who wish to pursue a career at the Bar.
The Fund allows the Law School to fund 12 bursaries of up to £300 each. Bursaries are for expenses in connection with applying to practise at the Bar (eg, mini-pupillages). It may cover travel, accommodation and other reasonable expenditure.
Applications for a bursary should via statement of intent by email to Dalia Aizi.
In the statement of intent, students should outline:
- how the bursary is to be used in connection with a career at the Bar, with an indication of supporting evidence
- the total amount requested (up to £300), with a breakdown of expenses to be incurred
Reflecting that Bar activities are throughout the academic year, there is no deadline. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis, as and when submitted. Applications must be received at least 4 weeks prior to the intended expenditure. 12 bursaries are available in the course of each academic year.
