COVID-19 (Coronavirus) and changes to our services

Within Government constraints to manage the spread of Coronavirus, the University is doing everything it can to provide essential services for our students. In the Library, we aim to support you in continuing with your studies and research via a range of online services.

Closure of the Library buildings

The Philip Robinson Library, Marjorie Robinson Library Rooms, Walton Library, the Law Library and Research Reserve are closed. This will mean changes and suspension to some of our services.

The Library does not expect any staff or students to return items that they currently have on loan until the Library buildings re-open.

The Library is still open online!

The Library website offers access to our extensive range of electronic resources. We will be accelerating our efforts to purchase additional e-books and other online resources to support you. New resources will be highlighted on our Resources page and via Twitter.

Library Help will continue to respond to queries through libraryhelp@ncl.ac.uk email and our 24/7 Library chat service.

Other online services:

  • New Online Learning resources on the Academic Skills Kit (ASK) to help you study successfully in an online environment.
  • Books on Time will continue to be available, and staff and students may request titles through this route which will be purchased, if available, in electronic format. 
  • The inter-library loans service can no longer accept requests for books, we will endeavour to meet requests for articles and book chapters where they can be supplied electronically. Advice on how to make online requests is available on our inter-library loans pages. If you have any inter-library loan enquiries, please email libraryhelp@ncl.ac.uk.
  • The Writing Development Centre is offering one to one distance tutorials for all students. These can be booked in the usual way at One to One.
  • The Library Liaison Teams are also offering distance One to One consultancies for students, to assist with finding and evaluating information for academic work. These can be booked online in the usual way.
  • Special Collections finding aids can still be browsed and digital content, including digitised items, exhibitions, and online features, can be explored on the Special Collections website. The Special Collections team will also be responding to all enquiries via e-mail and you can contact them at lib-specenq@ncl.ac.uk.
  • Support for Open Access is now being provided remotely. Please email openaccess@ncl.ac.uk.
  • Support for Research Data Management and Open Research Data is now being provided remotely. Please visit research.ncl.ac.uk/rdm or email rdm@ncl.ac.uk for assistance.
