New Students: welcome to the Library

New Students: welcome to the Library

For those who are joining us on campus for the first time, welcome! To help you get the best from your university experience as well as information on how the library can help, read on.

Using the Library

The Philip Robinson Library, Walton Library (our Medical Library), Law Library and Marjorie Robinson Library Rooms are open with a range of spaces, resources and services to help you succeed in your studies. Individual study spaces are openly available for you to chose a silent, quite or collaborative space, with group rooms and booths available for pre-booking.

If you prefer to organise your day, some silent study spaces are available to pre-book book in Philip Robinson Library and the Marjorie Robinson Library Room.

Explore more

Visit one of the libraries and take a self-guided tour to explore our range of quiet, silent and group study spaces and extensive book collections. Grab a map from the Welcome Desk and get started.

Finding books

Finding books is simple using Library Search and our shelves are open for you to browse. Once you’ve located the books you need on the shelf, you will find self-issue kiosks on all floors to enable you to borrow books easily. If you need assistance in locating books or are uncertain about using self-issue, staff at the Library Help Desk will be happy to help.

If a book you need is already on loan you can request it via Library Search and we will arrange to get a copy to you as soon as possible.

Borrowing books

You can borrow books for as long as you need them unless someone else reserves them. We will tell you when you need to return them. A Click and Collect service is available for those who prefer to minimise their time in the Library, enabling you to reserve books and pick them up at a time convenient to you.

Returning books

Returning books is easy using our self-return kiosks located across campus:

  • Philip Robinson Library – kiosks available on Level 2
  • Walton Library – kiosk available opposite the Library Help Desk
  • Marjorie Robinson Library Rooms - return kiosk located inside the building on the ground floor
  • Dame Margaret Barbour Building - return kiosk located on the ground floor

Or drop them in the book return slots outside the Philip Robinson Library or Walton Library.
