Request an item

STEP ONE Find an archive collection item or a rare book

> You can browse all of our archive and rare book collections by linking to our Collections Guide.

> All of our collections are also on the University Library Catalogue.

> An archive collection can cover several boxes of material.  However you will normally see a link to a 'finding aid' which will list the collection contents in more detail, so that you can just order the boxes or items you need.  Remember to make a note of the title and reference code when you are looking through the finding aid, as you will need these when you order your item.

STEP TWO Order your item

Whether you are in the Collections Guide or the University Library Catalogue, you will see a 'Request' link which will take you to our Special Collections request form.  For books, all of the collection and shelfmark codes will have been pre-populated and you will simply need to add your own details and submit your request.  For archive collections (which can sometimes cover several boxes of material) the collection codes will have been pre-populated but you will also need to tell us which particular items or boxes from the collection you are interested in before your submit your request.  Once we have reveived your request we will bring your item into the Special Collections Reading Room for you to consult.

If you already know the item codes you for the items you wish to order you can also link directly to our Request Form.

There are two collections a day (morning and afternoon, Monday to Friday) so your item will normally be ready for you by the next working day at the latest. However if you are not a member of the University and you are arranging travel please allow two working days in case the item is already in use or otherwise inaccessible.

STEP THREE Consult your item in the Reading Room

Once you have received an email letting you know that your item is ready, please come to the Special Collections reading room, which is on Level One of the Philip Robinson Library.

Please note, if you are not a member of the University you will need to bring Photo ID and report to the Library Reception on arrival.
