We offer a range of resources for researchers and research students including specialist equipment, linguistics software and databases, and space for meetings, seminars and social activities.

The Centre has a dedicated space in the Old Library building in room 3.01 and 3.02.

Special equipment

Eye tracker

With generous support from the Faculty, we have purchased a state-of-the-art eye-tracker. Eye-tracking is a more and more widely used technique for research in a wide range of areas in linguistics and language sciences, such as human language development, second language acquisition, reading behaviour, and lateralisation studies.

Phonetics lab

We have a superbly-equipped phonetics lab, with equipment for ultra-sound imaging, electropalatography, nasometry, and laryngography. For further details about this equipment, please contact Ghada Khattab.

Equipment for hire

We have the following equipment available to hire:

  • sound recorders (1x Edirol R-09HR, 3x Olympus WS-4505)
  • laptops (2x Toshiba Protege R700)

We also provide training in the open-source software R (statistics) and LaTeX (document creation and drawing linguistic diagrams).

Commercial software:

  • E-prime - We currently have six licences. E-prime is downloadable
  • Treeform - a linguistic syntax / semantics tree drawing editor


iLAB:Learn is a practice-based research lab. It supports and promotes the research, development and application of digital technologies in education and learning. 

iLAB:Learn include staff and students from the School of Computing Science (CS) and School of Education, Linguistics and Communication Sciences (ECLS).
