Enhancing the Linguistic Heritage of the North East

Talk of the Toon is an online resource that preserves the cultural heritage of North Eastern English dialects. It gives users unprecedented access to multimedia material spanning five decades.

We developed this tool as part of the Diachronic Electronic Corpus of Tyneside English (DECTE) project. Which took place from 2010 and 2012. Our researchers collaborated with regional museums. The project provided them with new ways to share their collections with the public.

The pedagogical resources generated have significantly benefitted primary and secondary education. Talk of the Toon's impact has reached far beyond the region, to a wide range of educators and students worldwide.
