Background
Background
I am a Senior Lecturer in experimental phonetics and phonology interested in examining the links between production, perception and learning/acquisition.
I received my BA in Jordan at Yarmouk University, Irbid in Modern Languages: French and English Language and Literature in 1998. I moved to France to Lyon II University where I obtained two BAs: BA in Teaching French as a Foreign Language (FLE) in 1999, and a BA in Language Sciences in 2000. I then obtained two MA degrees in Language Sciences, option Phonetics and Phonology in 2001 and 2002. I started working on my PhD in 2002 at the University Lyon 2 on the role of Dynamic cues in Production and Perception of vowels in Arabic and French, and earned my Diploma in 2007. I started working at the University of Newcastle in December 2007 as a Research Associate with Dr. Ghada Khattab on the Acquisition of Phonology by Lebanese Arabic speaking children. In September 2013, I was appointed as a Lecturer in Phonetics, then from August 2019, I am Senior Lecturer in Phonetics at Newcastle University.

2007-2010: Research Associate on the project "Phonological acquisition in multilingual settings: the case of Lebanese Arabic", supervised by Dr. Ghada Khattab. My work consists of the identification of the acoustical basis of gemination in Lebanese Arabic on the adults data (12 males and 12 females), by investigating the effect of gemination on both consonants and vowels. After that, a longitudinal study will be conducted to evaluate the acquisition of geminates in Lebanese Arabic children aged 9 to 24 months in multilingual setting.
2002-2007: For my doctoral research, I carried out an investigation on the role of dynamic cues identified in production and their impact on the perception of vowels in Jordanian and Moroccan Arabic in comparison with French. By dynamic cues I mean the spectral information available in the transition between vowels and consonants, while the static ones include the mid-point values of vowel formants. A perceptual design was developed in order to test the ability of listeners of each language to identify the vocalic prototypes of their systems. Main results show that the dynamic cues do affect the identification of prototypes in each language.

PhD funding opportunities
Applications from prospective PhD applicants are encouraged for projects in the areas of the relationship between phonetics and phonology with emphasis on laboratory phonology style studies. Studies combining both theory and experimental evidence are welcome. Experimental techniques range between acoustic analyses of the speed signal, to articulatory techniques (e.g., Ultrasound Tongue Imaging, Electroglottography, Electropalatography, Oro-nasal airflow), to speech perception with application of machine learning and classification techniques (e.g., ensemble learning, gradient boosting machines, random forests, deep learning, etc.). An emphasis on the multiplicity of correlates in defining phonological patterns is preferred. The work can be done on any language/dialect. Work can also be done on populations identified with Speech Sound Disorder, by using advanced acoustic and/or articulatory analyses to aid detection and identification of , e.g., use of acoustic metrics (both segmental and suprasegmental) in, e.g., schizophrenia, Alzheimer, dementia, with application of machine learning techniques

Teaching
My teaching spans multiple levels, from UG to, PGT to PhD level.
I am currently module leader on SPE2052, SPE8210 and SPE8032 (see below).
I support teaching of rticulatory, and auditory phonetics and its application to identify speech sound disorder (SSD) based on transcriptions using the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet), ear training in producing various sounds and non-sense words to sociophonetic variation (in SPE1053, SPE8151 and SPE8011).
In year 2 (SPE2052, SPE8210, SPE8011), I lead on teaching experimental phonetics and its application in clinical contexts. We concentrate on identifying normal variation in speech and how this differs from SSD. We use acoustic analyses as a first step and look at a variety of techniques that are useful in identifying place and manner of articulation in consonants and vowels. We look at application of instrumental analyses in assessing SSD in consonants, vowels, prosody and voice quality (seen in voice disorder).
At doctoral level, I lead on the teaching of the module SPE8032, that focuses on laboratory phonology and applications of instrumental techniques in providing an empiric evidence for phonological patterns.
