Industry Immersive Week - Dubai

As part of the Career Acceleration Programme students on the third year of the BSc International Business Management programme had the opportunity to visit Dubai for the International Business Immersion Week.

This week allowed students to visit several different companies and provided first-hand practical experience of the key fundamentals of any successful business.

Insignia

Insignia Worldwide was the first company visit, which is a strategic brand consultancy for travel, hospitality & destination brands. They are the world’s first brand enrichment company dedicated to destination brands. Insignia offers strategy, branding, design and communication services and currently work with over 180 hotels across 20 countries, 165 restaurants and over 40 leisure and lifestyle destinations.

The CEO Gaurav Sinha spoke to the students about the companies start and what brand management entailed. Gaurav spoke about aligning universal truths with consumer insights and how branding should always innovate and improve. He also spoke of the importance of driving policy change and being the trendsetters and the importance of a company to have depth to allow growth. Following on from this the Creative Director Max Lucci spoke of a case study company that they worked with and how they changed the whole prospect of connecting to the consumer via branding by introducing the concept of “I AM”. The case study showed the application of theory that Gaurav had discussed with the students ahead of the case study presentation.

The best company visit was Insignia, as they have been working with different companies and it is worldly recognised. It has given me a whole new experience and will help me in the future on how to plan strategies and what strategies should be kept in mind and how to go about them.Mehak, BSc International Business Management Student

Make A Wish Foundation

The next day students travelled to Abu Dhabi to visit the Make A Wish UAE Foundation, one of the world's leading children's charities. Make A Wish UAE grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions, between the ages of 3-18. Make A Wish has collectively granted approximately more than 415,000 wishes worldwide since 1980, impacting children in more than 50 countries through our 42 offices worldwide.

The visit started with the students finding out about the differences in a charity and foundation and background on the start-up of the global organisation. They discussed the importance of having and building a strong network and that the smallest details make a difference. Along with this, students gained knowledge of the organisations operations nationally under an international umbrella and how they balance the expectations.

My favourite part of the career experience week was the visit to the charity foundation. I learnt that you have to run the business from the people’s perspective and how to include customers into your company mission.Windy, BSc International Business Management Student

Rubber World Industries

The next visit was to Rubber World Industries (RWI), a manufacturer a comprehensive and versatile range of technically advanced Rubber Insulation products. Part of the Shaikhani Group of Companies, RWI is a pioneer UAE national enterprise that has become an industry leader in the entire Gulf and South-East Asia region.

Mr Moshin, Managing Director and Jittu George Mathew, HR and Admin Manager spoke of the three main components of a successful business; finance, operations and marketing. They spoke of the importance of social responsibility for an organisation which they did by creating products that helped lower global warming. This visit covered all areas from design to production to distribution and marketing, and how the strategies work in each area. The students got to physically see the creation of rubber and then how the material is created into a pipe and then packaged for distribution, and how any product un-used is recycled. Along with this they also visited the offices and spoke to Heads of Finance, Marketing and Sales.

One of the business that attracted my attention was Rubber World Industries. We had the opportunity to visit the factory and have information about the way that the business works, such as sales management and dealing with customers and marketing. This has allowed us to extend and develop our knowledge of the practical application of the theories and also of the relationships and the networks the business uses in the global workplace.Mehdi, BSc International Business Management Student

Azizi Development

Azizi Development is a design and customer lead development company. This means a permanent dedication to understanding and meeting their clients' aspirations, developing distinctive homes that set the standard in contemporary building design and offering an unparalleled level of customer service. The projects currently being developed by Azizi are Meyden, Palm Jumeriah, and Health Care City to name a few.

Mr Valentine, Sales Manager discussed the history of Dubai and the vision of the Shiekh for the country. He spoke about how different leading development companies all work together towards the same vision showing the importance of healthy competition while working towards the same end goal. He discussed land acquisition and the strategies behind the selection of the landmarks that the company has built.

My favourite part of this trip was when we went to the Azizi corporation. We got to learn how they acquire land in UAE and how they develop it, and what sort of marketing ideas they use and the tool they use to sell out units before they have developed it.Dave, BSc International Business Management Student

Along with the company visits students were also able to experience the culture and architecture of Dubai. Trips were arranged to the top of the Burj Khalifa, the Old Markets, and a desert Safari Experience.

Career Acceleration Programme

This three-part programme is designed to equip students with the skills they require to enter the professional world once they graduate. Students on the Year 3 International Business Management programme have had the opportunity to develop awareness in emotional, social and physical intelligence and participate in the International Business Immersion Week, Dubai. Leading on from this they will then take part in the "The Big Challenge Engagement".
