Dr Wessel Vermeulen

Lecturer in Economics


Wessel Vermeulen joined Newcastle University London in September 2016. He obtained degrees in Economics (BSc) and Financial Economics (MSc) from Maastricht University, The Netherlands, followed by a PhD from the University of Luxembourg, Luxembourg. He held a position as Junior Research Fellow at the University of Oxford for three years.

Wessel works on international and regional economics, using applied theoretical and empirical methods, as well as conflict studies and genocide prevention.


His research has been published in a.o. The Economic Journal (2015), Journal of Empirical Finance (2016).


Current research deals with regional interactions and spillovers, with applications to natural resources, trade and migration. Further interest includes international macroeconomics, financial markets, institutions and politics.
