Social Life

Some of the most inspiring connections you'll make at university will be outside of the classroom.

Students’ Union

Newcastle University London Students' Union (NUSU) is here to help you connect with fellow students outside the classroom. Make the most of your campus life, keep up your old hobbies and interests and explore new ones. NUSU are here for you through fresher’s week right up until your end of study with all your social needs! Keep up to date on our website and Facebook to see all the upcoming events we have in store, to keep your social life busy and exciting outside of your course. Alternatively come to the 4th floor to see your SU coordinator Charlotte, who can give you any advice or information needed.

Your personalised London guide

Before you join us, you'll receive a NUSU Connections Survey. Tell us a little more about yourself and your interests, and the team at the SU will research fun stuff on your behalf, and provide information to help you make the most out of London before you arrive.

The survey also matches you with other students with similar interests. It's a great way to make new friends before term even starts; chat and get to know each other online, so when you arrive on campus and meet face-to-face you'll feel more at home from day one.

Freshers' week

We plan events for your first 2 weeks of university to help you settle in, make friends and explore London, such as West End shows, London zoo, tour experiences, to night time events like club nights, bar crawls, and social food meet ups!

All events are discounted or sometimes completely free, and you can get tickets for these events on the website: www.nusu.co.uk/london/activities or from your students union on the 4th floor.

Clubs and societies

You can start your own society with NUSU, or join one we already have like Football, Cheer, Trading or Finance. It's a great way to make friends, enhance your CV and do a bit more of what you love.

University of London Student Central

You will also have the opportunity to become a member of Student Central for free. This is a Students' Union for students across the 27 institutions that make up the University of London.

You can access their venue, bar, gym, swimming pool and join in on any of their societies and sports teams, allowing you to connect with the wider student population.

Charity and volunteering

Lending a hand to worthy causes is a great way to make friends, connect with the wider community and boost your CV. The Students' Union will help you find volunteering opportunities such as student mentoring, or fundraising for charities such as Providence Row - an innovative local charity that works to prevent and reduce homelessness here in the East End.

Adventures on your doorstep

Although our campus community is friendly and welcoming, you'll want to make the most of our local area too. Multicultural Whitechapel's markets, galleries and contemporary exhibitions give a taste of traditional London, while Spitalfields Market and the fiery flavours and buzzing bars of Brick Lane are just around the corner.

You'll stumble across up-and-coming fashion boutiques, independent art galleries and mouthwatering food markets.

Keeping happy and healthy

If you enjoy sport, or would like to get more active, you'll love living in London. From waterpolo, football, rugby, baseball to dodgeball, you can access some of the greatest sports clubs in the country.

London was home to the 2012 Olympic Games, and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is just three tube stops from the campus! Follow in the footsteps of Olympians including the Cooper Box (host to handball, modern pentathlon, fencing and goalball in the Games), Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre, Lee Valley Velopark and the London Aquatics Centre.

If you fancy something sporty right on your doorstep, join the football club and play on the 5-a-side pitches in Shoreditch. Closer still are our on-campus facilities: there's a Fitness First gym in the basement, plus table tennis tables near the third floor cafe.
