Newcastle University London

5 best things to do in London before Uni starts

Busy city centre may seem like not a very obvious place to be during summer, but London has so much to offer over holidays!

If you decided to stay in London for summer or are planning to come here some time before your course starts – brace yourself. You are going to get the best tips on what, when and where to do.

1. Watch a movie in Battersea Power Station

This hidden place is an absolute gem and my personal favourite to hang out with friends. Not only are there many great, cosy restaurants and food stalls, but they also show movies on the huge screen every now and then. It’s great to grab a drink, sit comfortably on the sunbeds and have an amazing time watching a good film with a river view! PS. They organise many fantastic events (like seafood festival) so keep your eyes peeled.

2. Go to a local market

Newcastle University London is located within a few minutes’ walk from Spitalfields Market, which is a very popular lunch destination for business people working in the offices around, as well as with our students no matter what the weather is, thanks to the roof.

3. Do sports

Most of the people I know in London are trying to be as active as possible. Almost everyone has a gym membership. What if I told you that exercise outdoors is not only cheaper, but also way more fun! And yes, it is possible in London. Embankment is a stunning place to run in the evening, when it is less crowded. Hyde Park and Regent’s Park are also great jogging destinations. People also do yoga, play football and badminton there. In Lincoln’s Inn there is a well shaded tennis court – very popular with professionals.

4. Go places

If you have some extra money to spare go and see places outside of London’s centre. If you are a fan of flowers, grass and fresh air Kew Gardens is the place to visit. If you prefer sea then London is only about an hour drive away from the coast, which means you don’t need to pay for a hotel to have a nice day on the beach!

5. Treat yourself

There are many amazing restaurants in London. Many places have their own garden, terrace or rooftop and the food will make you taste buds go crazy. I particularly enjoy Chicama in Chelsea, Dalloway Terrace in Bloomsbury with amazing flower installations and Aviary in Shoreditch for breath-taking views.
