Big Data, Scalability and Computation

We're at the forefront of developments in the efficient analysis of big data sets.

Big data challenges

Big data sets are generated by modern sensing, imaging and measurement. Our group works to ensure these can be analysed efficiently.

Other projects include the following:

  • close work with the urban observatory in Newcastle - projects analyse massive data sets generated by sensors placed around the city and region
  • work in stochastic emulation of complex computer models
  • work on the theory and application of Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC)
Server room of a data centre.

Doctoral training in cloud computing for big data

Joint with the School of Computing, we run an EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Cloud Computing for Big Data. This provides around five new PhD students each year. Students work on projects involving:

  • time-series data
  • large spatial data sets
  • genomics
