Big data, scalability and computation

The statistics research group is at the forefront of  developments in the efficient analysis of big data sets generated by modern sensing, imaging and measurement systems. Joint with the School of Computing, we run an EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Cloud Computing for Big Data. This provides around five new PhD students each year, with the students working on projects involving time series data, large spatial data sets and genomics, for example.

Other projects include the following:

  • close work with the urban observatory in Newcastle, on projects analysing massive data sets generated by sensors placed around the city and region
  • particular expertise in stochastic emulation of complex computer models
  • work on the theory and application of Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC)
