Choosing Newcastle

As a Russell Group university, I felt Newcastle University would give me a good opportunity for my future career. I visited my friend here last year and fell in love with the city and general atmosphere of the surrounding areas. On the open day, I felt everyone was very friendly and more than happy to answer any questions I had, more so than other unis.

Studying at Newcastle

Overall I am happy with the teaching quality, as all the lecturers clearly have a vast understanding of their material and are generally happy to answer and explain questions that weren’t clear. The material is a lot harder than I was expecting but they all do their best to make it as relatable to the A level specification or give lots of real life examples in order to make it easier to understand. I like the fact we have access to lots of questions and past exam papers to test our knowledge.

Studying Mathematics

My favourite module is Calculus, as I understand the majority of what we have learnt as it is similar to the A level syllabus. I also enjoy Problem Solving as it gives me the opportunity to sit, think and really reflect on tricky problems that I didn’t understand first time. Initially I found Problem Solving the most difficult module as there was no set formula to work on every problem. After experimenting and trying some questions I have really learnt to enjoy it and find it very rewarding.

Recommending Newcastle

I would say Maths is an extremely rewarding but very challenging course. It is useful to have if, like me, you don’t know what career you want to do - it is such a versatile degree. You do have to be prepared to work from the beginning of the course as it all builds on the knowledge you gain in Year 1.

Future plans

I don’t know exactly what I want to do, which is why I picked such an open degree that can really lead on to anything. I am interested in coding, and problem solving so maybe something to do with GCHQ or security. I have applied for a paid summer internship at GCHQ to get some experience.
