External Clinical Fellowships

External Clinical Fellowships

Newcastle University has a long history of supporting early and mid-career clinical researchers. We develop senior clinical academics that are national or international leaders in their field.

The introduction of the integrated academic training pathway enhanced this talent development process. It was a result of the Walport Report (2005).

We encourage our academic trainees to examine the wide range of clinical fellowships available. Those eligible include:

  • doctors
  • dentists
  • nurses
  • midwives
  • other allied health care professionals

Our Faculty has an enviable success rate in these at the pre-doctoral and post-doctoral levels.

Dr Justin Durham manages our externally funded clinical fellowship support programme. He is a post-doctoral fellowship holder and previous Integrated Academic Trainee.

We aim to help promising and talented clinical researchers to make the leap from early stage idea to funded fellows. This is for the pre- or post-doctoral stage. We offer a comprehensive programme of support up to, and following, a fellowship award including:

  • peer led mentoring from previously successful applicants
  • senior academic mentoring of applications
  • bite-size seminars on subjects relevant to your funding application
  • internal peer review of applications
  • mock interview panels and video feedback
  • debriefs on successful and unsuccessful applications
  • ring-fenced funds for pre-doctoral applications for doctoral fellowships
  • opportunities to engage with the public and patients

Our support programme is for all academic, aspiring academic, and health care professionals. It is not limited to any profession or particular job title, but is of particular relevance to those in:

  • academic foundation
  • academic clinical fellow
  • National Institute for Health Research Clinical Lectureship posts
