Staff Profile
Dr Carl Hulston
Senior Lecturer in Sport & Exer Science
I joined Newcastle University in 2020 as Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Science. Before this, I completed my PhD at the University of Birmingham (2006-2008) and completed postdoctoral training at the Copenhagen Muscle Research Centre/ Metabolic Mass Spectrometry Facility (2008-2010), where I was mentored by Professor Gerrit van Hall and Professor Bengt Saltin. I also held academic posts at Brunel University (2010-2012) and Loughborough University (2012-2020).
My research focuses on how diet and exercise influence human metabolic health and performance, with special emphasis on skeletal muscle. Much of this work involves the provision of small amounts of isotopically labelled compounds, combined with blood and tissue sampling, to trace the turnover and fate of key substrates of interest (e.g., glucose, amino acids, free fatty acids). I have a particular interest in how overeating and inactivity leads to impairments in skeletal muscle metabolism, as well as understanding the decline in muscle mass and function that occurs with ageing.
