Training and Development

Study With Us

Whether it’s training for you or for your whole organisation, we have the necessary experience and expertise to ensure you get the best results for your time and resources.

Last year, Newcastle taught over 5,000 postgraduate students, the vast majority of whom came to us for professional or work-related courses. Our courses offer up-to-date and industrially relevant material in short, intensive programmes, many of which address serious skills shortages.

We are ranked 8th overall in the UK for our research power and are in the top five for hospital and laboratory-based clinical research; over two-thirds of our outputs are classified as world leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*) in the broad thematic areas of ageing, chronic disease, genetics and stem cells.

Our postgraduate teaching was rated as ‘consistently good’ (or above) by 95% of respondents to the PTES survey.

World-class staff and facilities

Study with us and you'll have access to:

  • a modern, city centre campus with excellent transport links
  • our scientific facilities and equipment
  • expert teachers from industry, the health service or the University
  • a dedicated administrator to provide support throughout your studies, from application to completion

Flexibility and value

Our courses are short and flexible, providing excellent value for both students and employers. We offer:

  • courses delivered as pure distance learning or as block teaching, minimising disruption to work and other commitments
  • assessed courses, ensuring that your staff will have verification of their learning and ability to apply their new skills
  • short-courses that build into higher qualifications such as Certificates, Diplomas and Masters, through our Credit Accumulation and Transfer scheme
  • funding to assist with course fee costs or for costs of commissioning bespoke provision (depending on your circumstances)

We appreciate that every business and every learner's need can be unique, and we're happy to develop training to meet your needs. see our bespoke course information for more details.

Further information

There is further information on studying at Newcastle University on the University's Postgraduate website.

For information on the wider region go to the NewcastleGateshead website.

You can also contact us for more information.

Our part-time, flexible CPD courses are designed to fit around your existing work commitments.

We work closely with our local partners in the health service and in industry to design, develop and update the teaching materials on our courses - this helps to ensure that what we deliver matches the requirements of the students and organisations that we deliver to.

We design bespoke courses, tailored for the needs of a particular organisation and/or learner group and are a logical extension of this undertaking and an area in which Newcastle has experience and expertise.

If you're interested in working with us to develop a short course to meet the training requirements of your workforce, contact us

If you're a local business or small to medium size enterprise then funding may be available to assist with the development and running of bespoke courses.

You may be able to apply for funding for your CPD courses.

Depending on your personal circumstances and course of study, there are a variety of different funding support methods and support organisations available, a few of which are listed below.

Your employer

Many of our courses are designed to improve your skills and knowledge within the workplace. For many people, the first point of call is to speak to their employer about sponsorship opportunities. Detailed funding information for individuals is available on the Funding and Finance pages of the University's Postgraduate website. The course administrator may also be able to assist you.

If you're an NHS employee, there may also be separate initiatives through the Strategic Health Authority, clinical deanery and other similar bodies. For many students the funding available will depend on your course of study, your employer and individual circumstances.

You can also contact our Enterprise Team to discuss financial support in greater detail.
